About the team/job
We are seeking for a highly motivated and excellent research technician to join our team. The Ellenberg group is part of the Cell Biology & Biophysics Unit and a multidisciplinary team consisting of biologists, chemists, physicists and computer scientists. Our overall goal is to systematically elucidate the mechanisms underlying cell division (mitosis & meiosis) and nuclear organisation (chromosomes & nuclear pores) with cutting-edge imaging technology. For that purpose, we are developing a broad range of advanced light and electron microscopy technologies to assay the functions of the involved molecular machinery non-invasively, automate the microscopy to address as many molecular components as possible, and computationally mine image data to extract biochemical and biophysical parameters.
The successful applicant will support pre- and post-doctoral fellows in the group that study the organisation of the genome in 3D and map its structure to the epigenetic landscape in single cells. These projects employ new methods of fluorescent DNA and protein labelling, including fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) as well as DNA-PAINT in mammalian cultured cells combined with cutting-edge light microscopy S/he will thus support and collaborate with several colleagues to advance our knowledge on the 3D folding principles of DNA and their functional consequences in situ inside the nucleus.
The candidate should master mammalian cell culture, molecular engineering, basic biochemical methods and fluorescence microscopy. The candidate should have experience in providing technical support with a high degree of independence, to assist with experimental design, protocol development and troubleshooting, to organise laboratory reagents/databases/material, to be responsible for instruments maintenance and should enjoy working in an international team in a highly collaborative atmosphere.
You have at least 5 years of experience as a research technician/assistant in the field of life sciences or related disciplines after completing your Technician or M.Sc. degree or you have 2 years of experience in the same field after completing your PhD. degree.
Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required.
You might also have
Experience with DNA-FISH/PAINT or super-resolution microscopy is an advantage.
Why join us
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits. Excellent child care facility is available on campus.
What else you need to know
We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.
The working language of the institute is English.
In your online application, you will be asked to include a cover letter and a CV.
Interviews will take place on 6 June 2019.
