Offer Description

We are looking for a PhD student to analyze data from a prototype instrument observing seismic waves on multiple spans of trans-oceanic subsea cables. The oceans are difficult to access for seismic measurements, but utilizing existing telecom subsea cables could potentially revolutionize the way we monitor seismic waves in oceanic regions. The method uses transmission fiber-optic sensing, converting each span (~50-100km) of the cable into a single sensor. At this time there are only a few instruments of this type operating world wide. While we observe seismic arrivals and waveforms in the data, due to the unusual sensing method, there is very little development so far of how to interpret these observations.

At this time we are looking for a PhD student that is willing to dive into the data, document the observations and develop a framework for interpreting the signal. We are looking for a person that is (or will be!) enthusiastic about seismic waves, signal analysis and computing. A masters degree in geophysics or related fields (physics, math, engineering, … ) is required. The project is in part of a collaboration where the instrument is developed by Nokia Bell Labs.

Applications should be submitted via the university's online application system and must include CV and cover letter stating why you are interested in this project and how your background might make you the right person for the job. Potential starting date, as well as contact information for two potential references (names, institutional addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers) will be requested.

For further details, contact Dr. Vala Hjörleifsdóttir, Associate Professor, Department of Engineering, Reykjavík University: valah@ru.is.

The position is open until filled; review of applications will start June 9th, 2025.
