Offer Description
We are looking for a Postdoctoral scholar to develop and apply seismological methods for exploring geothermal fields with fiber-optic sensing (DAS) data. The project is focused on two geothermal fields, Krýsuvík and Nesjavellir.
Data will be acquired on seismic nodes together with telecom cables crossing the geothermal fields of Krýsuvík, a currently undeveloped field, but under consideration for both electricity generation and production of hot-water for district heating. Data is available on a cable crossing the geothermal field of Nesjavellir from a previous project, but additional data could be acquired.
The focus is on methods estimating vp/vs ratios as well as detecting any potential reflective surfaces, such as the top of a magma chamber.
The project is funded by Reykjavík Energy and HS Orka, the two largest geothermal operators in Iceland, and will be carried out in collaboration with them. The position is for one year, but could be extended, depending on availability of funding. Starting date is negotiable, but could be effective immediately. A PhD in geophysics or related fields (physics, math, engineering) is required.
Applications should be submitted via the university's online application system and must include CV and cover letter stating why you are interested in this project and how your background might make you the right person for the job. Potential starting date, as well as contact information for two potential references (names, institutional addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers) will be requested.
For further details, contact Dr. Vala Hjörleifsdóttir, Associate Professor, Department of Engineering, Reykjavík University: valah@ru.is.
The position is open until filled; review of applications will start June 9th, 2025.
